Boy Scout Troop 51 readies for Community Service !
Mansfield Relay For Life - June 12th
Troop 51 has had a strong Relay team for the past 3 years and assisted in Relay set-up a few years before that. This year we will have another great team and we are looking for members. Troop 51 became involved with the Relay For Life as a way of providing service to our community. Never did anyone think that it would come to have a greater meaning for our Troop.
Matt McCue was one of the founding members of Troop 51 and a Scout since he was a Tiger Cub. Matt passed away January 4, 2009 from cancer. He was just 20 years old. Matt participated in the Relay 2 years in a row prior to last year when he was in the hospital and could not attend. When he first became involved with the Relay For Life he had no idea that cancer would later strike him.
Relay For Life is a team event to fight cancer and I am asking you to join our Scouting for a Cure team. At the event, we'll camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission.
There is an incredible ceremony to celebrate cancer survivors and caregivers that starts off the night, and a moving luminary ceremony to honor and remember those who have fought the disease. You'll be walking with people you'll recognize - and you may be surprised to see who's a cancer survivor.
I can truly say Relay is unlike anything else you'll ever experience. It's a night full of fun, hope, and remembrance, and the money we raise will help the American Cancer Society ease the burden of cancer patients and fund innovative cancer research.
